Cunningham entered the British navy in 1898.  During World War I, he commanded a destroyer.  During World War II, he commanded British naval forces in the Mediterranean.  He defeated the Italian navy at Taranto and commanded the naval forces for the invasion of North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
